2018 Conference

 Recipe For Success

The 54th Annual Illinois Teachers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Conference will be held on March 1st-3rd, 2018, in Springfield, Illinois. We all know that with the right spices and flavoring, you can create an amazing meal. The same idea can be applied to the classroom. Each student needs individualized ingredients to make their educational experience amazing!

Gallaudet President, Dr. Roberta “Bobbi” Cordano, will share her thoughts and the current research on starting a recipe for success. In this session, she will provide the audience information on Visual Language Learning access for deaf children and will show that parents need to become fluent in a visual language to support language acquisition for their deaf child and grow in their social and emotional needs.

Dr. Barbara Luetke will overview the ingredients in the recipe for success used by the Northwest School for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Children (Seattle area). These include an evidence-based philosophy and curriculum; assessment driven lesson-planning; commitment to a consistent method of communication; appropriately-trained staff; respect for cultural diversity; and intentional listening, speech articulation, and English language strategies that can be used by professionals in a variety of educational situations. Dr. Luetke was a professor in Deaf Education for almost 30 years, training over 350 teachers of the deaf, and now serves as outreach coordinator at the school.
